Bakelite jewellery became popular in the 1920s and 1930s as one of the first widely used plastics, valued for its warm tones and ability to take on a soft lustre with wear. This beaded necklace dates to around 1930 and shows the classic “apple juice” colour often associated with aged Bakelite. It is 48cm long with graduated beads threaded on string and finished with a brass screw closure, giving it a comfortable and balanced drape. The front seven beads display a higher shine than those around the neck, likely from decades of contact with skin, a typical and honest sign of use. A well-preserved example of early plastic jewellery with subtle variation that reflects its age and wear.
