Description
This antique baby’s rattle is made from sterling silver and ivory, hallmarked Chester 1895, and weighs 35.38g. The ivory section is 5cm in diameter and is carved with an expressive “man in the moon” face. It was made by Cornelius Saunders and James Francis, a respected Chester partnership active in the late 19th century and well known for high-quality small silver wares, particularly christening gifts such as rattles, whistles, and teething rings. Their work is noted for crisp casting, playful yet refined motifs, and careful finishing, making surviving examples both collectible and historically interesting today.
