Description

Model Steamship “Rover” in Case, handmade by the Irish shipbuilder William McKinlay c.1900. The case is 1127mm x 689mm x 247mm deep.

This model steam ship, named SS Rover, was made by Mr. William McKinlay who worked as a ship builder and riveter for the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Ireland in the early 1900s.  Mr. McKinlay was born in Ireland and worked as a ship builder in Belfast for most of his working life for Harland and Wolff until he retired and lived out his remaining days in Canada.

Harland and Wolff is still a commercial and functioning shipyard that specializes in repair, conversion and offshore construction.  It is located in Belfast, Ireland and is famous for having built the majority of ocean liners for the White Star Line, most reputable of which was the doomed Titanic. Some say the Titanic disaster was the result of poor rivet work and it is most likely that our model ship builder, Mr. McKinlay, was involved in the construction of the Titanic, and many other similar vessels, at that time.

The S.S Rover was an 87 ton passenger / cargo steam ship made in 1874 by Henderson Coulborn and Co. in Cardiff, England.  She was shipwrecked in 1899 on Whiting Bay near Youghal, Cork, Ireland. More information is on file at the Shop and is available upon request.
